Tet Walk

2020

Tet Walk fuses Vietnamese culture and haute cuisine. The kitchen becomes a runway backstage as Tet preparations begin. Parents are the designers, food the models. Pork is wrapped in banh chung, chicken paired with xoi gac, beef topped with gio bo. Each slice of carrot is a meticulous craft. Traditional dishes are elevated to edible art, the table a feast for the eyes and palate. Tet Walk celebrates the artistry of Vietnamese cuisine through a playful fashion lens.

I created Tet Walk as the visual representation of this interesting similarity. Taking fashion publications as my references, I decided to present this project in the form of a lookbook pamphlet. As the viewers flip through it, they will see a collection of Tet dishes illustration with a twist. Here, the ingredients become the model while the dishes turn into the outfit. Through Tet Walk, I wish to present a novel and humorous interpretation of this valuable Vietnamese tradition.

The illustrations visually represent each dish and its key ingredient, providing insight even for those less familiar with Vietnamese cuisine. The pork models a Chung Cake dress, beef pairs a Vietnamese Sausage top, chicken an outfit of Red Sticky Rice, and fish styles Stewed Fish. This approach links the featured foods with their core components through creative personification. The recipe on the back of each page offer a fun, accessible window into traditional Tet dishes for viewers of all backgrounds.

The Booklet

Tet Walk is designed as a perforated booklet in which each page can be removed and used as a postcard. A list of ingredients is written on the back of the postcard in correspond to each dish. This mimics the act of sharing and caring - values that are strongly emphasized during Tet holiday. The booklet is delivered in a die-cute postcard sleeve.
